This castle was probably built by the Michalovic Family during the 13th century. It was built on a massive cliff looking over the valley of the Kamenice River as protection of the nearby trade route. The castle was repeatedly conquered and destroyed in 1440 by the armies of the Lusatian towns in retaliation for raids by the castle’s owners into Germany. The castle remained deserted from the 15th century.
At the end of the 19th century an access route was established to the castle and the top of the castle was modified by the Českokamenický Mountain Association as a look-out platform in 1890. The perimeter wall of the lower castle is still noticeably visible today.
Fredevald is part of a protected location, the Pustý zámek (Deserted Chateau) natural monument.
